Screening Matters at Age 45

Current medical guidelines recommend starting colorectal cancer screening at age 45 for adults at average risk. Beginning early helps detect potential issues before they become serious.

  • Colorectal cancer often starts as precancerous polyps, which can be found and removed during a colonoscopy—preventing cancer before it develops. which can be detected and removed before they turn into cancer.
  • Screening can also detect cancer early, when treatment is most effective.
  • If you have a family history, symptoms, or other risk factors, you may need to start screening even earlier. Learn more from the CDC: https://www.cdc.gov/colorectal-cancer/screening/index.html

FIT At Home Screening Kits

Prefer a simple and private screening option? Our Fecal Immunochemical Test (FIT) kits allow you to complete a test at home. The kit checks for hidden blood in the stool, which can be an early sign of colorectal concerns and help determine whether further screening is recommended.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I need to start screening at 45?

Because leading gastroenterology and public health organizations now recommend starting at age 45 due to rising colorectal cancer rates in younger adults.

Is colon cancer really preventable?

Yes. Screening can detect and remove polyps before they turn into cancer—making colorectal cancer preventable.

What are my screening options?

Options include colonoscopy, FIT kits, and other stool-based tests. A positive stool test must be followed by a colonoscopy.

How often do I need screening?

Most people need a colonoscopy every 10 years or a FIT test annually, but this varies by personal risk.

What if my FIT test comes back abnormal?

You’ll need to schedule a followup colonoscopy to complete the screening process.

What symptoms should I watch for?

Rectal bleeding, unexplained weight loss, changes in bowel habits, or persistent abdominal pain should be evaluated.

Is the procedure painful?

No. Sedation keeps most patients comfortable, and many report remembering very little afterward.

How long is recovery?

Most patients return to normal activities the next day, though you’ll need a ride home post-procedure.

What to Expect

Before Your Colonoscopy

  • You’ll receive clear instructions to help you prepare, including guidance on diet and bowel prep. Most people follow a clear‑liquid diet and use a bowel‑cleaning solution the day before. If you have questions at any point, our team is here to support you.

During the Procedure

  • A colonoscopy typically takes 30 to 60 minutes. You’ll receive sedation to help you stay comfortable throughout the exam. If polyps are found, they can often be removed during the procedure to prevent future issues.

After Your Colonoscopy

  • You’ll rest for a short time while the sedation wears off. Because of the medication, someone will need to drive you home. Your provider will review the results with you and outline any next steps in your care.
