Women's Health Specialists at St. James

OB-GYN

OB-GYNs, or obstetrician-gynecologists, are highly-trained doctors who care for women during pregnancy, childbirth and the recovery period following birth. They can also perform cesarean sections for scheduled or emergency situations.

Midwife

A certified nurse-midwife (CNM) is a registered nurse who is educated in nursing and midwifery and certified through the American College of Nurse-Midwives. CNMs focus on educating and empowering women to make healthy decisions and provide comprehensive women’s healthcare. They care for you from the early stages of pregnancy, through labor and delivery and into the first phase of postpartum care.

Family Medicine

Family practitioners are primary care doctors who treat a wide range of medical conditions. In addition to their expertise in general family health, some choose to emphasize and obtain specialized training in obstetrics.

Maternal Fetal Medicine

Maternal-fetal medicine specialists are OB-Gyns with specialized training in high-risk pregnancies. If your pregnancy is considered high-risk, and you’re already seeing an OB-Gyn or family medicine physician, they’ll work side-by-side with a maternal-fetal medicine specialist to minimize your risks and help you achieve the healthiest pregnancy possible.

St. James Lactation and Breastfeeding Support

If additional breastfeeding support is needed once a family has gone home, outpatient lactation services are available at St. James. Together, you and a lactation consultant will address any nursing problems or concerns in a private and nurturing environment. The lactation consultant will be able to tell you how much milk your baby is getting, evaluate your breastfeeding technique, help alleviate pain and provide guidance.

Spinning Babies® Parent Classes

Spinning Babies reveals how the baby can find optimal positions for labor and allows birth to be more comfortable. After this class, you will better understand how your baby can find optimal positions for labor. This class is for the expectant parent and their birth partner. It is ideal to take this class any time after 20 weeks of pregnancy.

The Spinning Babies® class is a great addition to the traditional 3-week childbirth series offered at St. James. Spinning Babies® can help you whether this is your first baby or not. These classes offer great hands-on training and will assist you no matter if you plan to have an unmedicated birth or an epidural. Creating space for the baby to rotate and engage allows for optimal positioning and may improve success if planning a vaginal birth after cesarean. The techniques taught in this class have also been shown to help rotate breech and sideways babies without the need for an external cephalic version.

Registration is required and we ask that you bring a yoga mat and a large exercise ball.
